Kohmi Bettei 2017 Vol.10 〜Sing with a piano LIVE
Last Sunday I went to a concert of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.
Did you know that there is a symphony orchestra in Hawaii?
I guess most of you didn’t know about it, too.
About a week After I arrived in Honolulu,
I searched on the internet and found this concert,
because it’s a big concert season now.
A lot of wonderful concerts are held in Hawaii,
so I should’t miss it.
Well, I’m going to talk about the concert from last Sunday.
The concert took place at the Neal S Blaisdell concert hall,
about 5 minutes by car from the Ala Moana Shopping Center.
At first glance it looked like a very old hall,
but when I entered the building the stage looked beautiful.
I think the capacity of the hall is about 2000 people
which is about the same size as the NHK hall in Japan.
I was looking forward to the performance by the Orchestra,
but even more to the conductor.
It is because the conductor of the day was Mr. Naoto Otomo,
who is one of the most famous conductors in Japan.
He was a conductor of a famous Japanese symphony orchestra,
and before that he also worked for the NHK Symphony Orchestra,
the Japan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and many others.
Now he continues to co-star with
many famous symphonies around the world.
The reason why I know his name is that
I had a few experiences attending his concerts
when I was a student at a music college in Tokyo.
From the first time I saw him,
I knew that Mr. Otomo was an excellent conductor.
Therefore, I was looking forward to seeing
how he conduct the Hawaiian Symphony Orchestra.
The funny thing was,
when they started playing it felt a little strange.
To me their sound was somewhat too relaxed and off tempo.
It sounded like their performance was not
unified and coming together.
Also, I may have heard some wrong sound several times
at the important parts of the performance.
However, Mr. Otomo was still conducting
delicately and sometimes powerfully as usual.
Overall I felt a lack of power and unity in their performance.
Perhaps everything is my misunderstanding,
or maybe this is a Hawaiian magic?
Aside from their performance.
I knew all the song of that day,
so it was really fun.
My soul was so excited to listen to Stravinsky
and Ravel’s songs.
On my way home I ran into a squall,
but the rain washed away all their strange performances.
this is again a Hawaiian magic!!
